Since the beginning of the bird flu here in the United States, egg prices have soared and averages reaching over 6 dollars a dozen here in the states. The United States has started to import more eggs and Brazil has started to fill some of the void. In just the month of February imports of Brazilian eggs reached over 4.936 million dollars. That had increased 63.2% compared to the same time last year. Previously Brazilian eggs weren’t allowed to be sold in the US for human consumption but rather only for pet consumption. Recently they have given permits out to Brazilian companies so they are able to be sold in the US for human consumption. The first 2 months of Brazilian exports of eggs into the US reached 9.122 million dollars.

The imports from Brazil are important as we are currently relying on countries outside of the US to provide us with eggs that are necessary. With the bird flu going around many arn’t happy with how expensive things are and there has been a lot of blame going around. That could shift people’s beliefs in elections and how popular Trump would be. Most important the leverage other nations could have over what they important to us. They are already making millions of dollars from eggs but they could also use that as a leverage for other trade deals or agreements.

Hopefully within the next few months this bird flu will resolve and egg prices will return to normal but currently we are relying on imports for eggs to fill in the void of the missing eggs. Brazil will most likely remain the same and keep prices normal at the current rate as they are making millions of dollars selling eggs to us. They could raise the prices of the eggs which would harm us but they most likely won’t as we would enforce tariffs on trade we do with them. This is mainly a regional thing between US and Brazil and isn’t an issue in the rest of the world. This isn’t really a conflict or a threat to anyone as it’s just trade relations between the nations that could be solved diplomaticly. We have great relations with the Brazilians so nothing seems to happen anytime soon.

Article Link: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/brazil-egg-exports-soar-amid-stronger-us-demand-2025-03-12/ During the month of February, egg imports from Brazil had increased 57.5% compared to the same time last year.
