He is now infamous in the United States and elsewhere as thousands advocate for either his deportation or freedom. He holds a green card and is married to an American citizen. The United States Department of Homeland Security argues that the arrest was part of the Trump administration’s efforts to stop antisemitism, but some Jewish groups have argued on Khalil’s behalf. Radical Jewish people and critics, however, say that his detainment was justified. His case is now being discussed by the courts, where they will decide on his freedom. Trump has said his detainment is the first of many, pledging to detain more college protesters who he believes sympathize with Hamas. “Targeting individual protesters just for protesting … is highly unusual and something that we haven’t seen before, even under the first Trump administration,” said Jacob Hamburger, a visiting assistant professor at Cornell Law School.

Khalil is now being held at a detention center in Louisiana. There are multiple sides to this case, but the most popular appears to be that Khalil’s free speech rights have been violated, and that his detainment was unjustified. Khalil does have a green card, which means he is a permanent resident of the United States and thus is entitled to protection by all US laws, however he does not have all the rights of a US citizen. Due to his green card status, he is more subject to scrutiny by the law. It is ultimately up to the courts to decide what will happen, but this is definitely not the last time this will happen. Trump has already been conducting mass deportations of illegal immigrants, and it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down anytime soon.

I do not believe anything will change regarding immigration policy in the US. As Hamburger said, targeting individual protesters is not a usual behavior, since normally it does not constitute a large threat to national security. However, with the war going on in Israel, antisemitism and violence are something the Trump administration has decided to keep a close eye on.

A Palestinian Columbia University alumni, named Mahmoud Khalil, was recently detained and now faces deportation because of his affiliation with Cuad, an anti-Israel student-run organization.
