The European Union and Canada have said that they are prepared to have even retaliatory trade measures to combat the tariffs placed on these countries. Many fear that a recession is now in the looms due to the tariffs and an economic crash is imminent. The S&P 500 dropped nearly 10% since mid February and gold hitting an all time high. Gold prices rise when an economic downfall is imminent since it retains it’s value during the times of economic trouble. The UK is even considering making retaliatory tariffs but is unsure at this time.

The fear of economic recession is causing a widespread panic that could hurt the economy majorly. In the case that the recession does happen, it would not only cause disruption within the states but also the rest of the world. This could have an impact that could last years long and could force many out of jobs and hurt our relations to other nations. Trade would be disrupted around the world and cause prices of things to rise and millions would lose jobs increase unemployment in the nation and cause a major financial crisis. Tensions are currently high and they are most likely going to continue to rise and would slow down how we do diplomacy.

The fears stem from Trumps tariffs and that could be resolved by taking the tariffs off and returning to how it was previous to the Trump administration. The widespread fear would slowly dissipate if the tariffs were to be overturned. The other option would also be that the nations that Trumps administration placed tariffs on would introduce retaliatory tariffs which would not be good for our economy as it would cause even larger of a panic. Being a unipolar power were able to have a lot of control over what happens and trade around the world but as we shift into bi-polar powers we lose some of that power. It’s our national interest and security to kind of know what the right thing to do and the tariffs by the Trump administration seem to be the correct thing to do by the advisors in the country.

Article Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czjny8kee1zo Markets are mixed about how to react over the tariffs placed on countries like China by the Trump administration.
