The federal government had invoked a law rarely used that allows individuals to be tried in U.S\/ jurisdiction for crimes abroad. A Gambian citizen, Michael Sang Correa, has been indicted back in 2020 when living in the United States. He was charged with conspiracy to mentally and physically torture individuals suspected to be involved in the failed coup in Gambia back in 2006. Human Rights Watch accounts that Correa is the third person who is to be tried in the U.S. law that allows people to be charged with committing torture abroad. The other two are U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There doesn’t seem to be that much of a debate of whether or not Correa should be tried. It is just interesting that his suspected crime had taken place 20 years ago and that the alleged crime happened in a different country. There is not true way to enforce International law so getting the ability to charge Correa in the U.S. is a leg up. This also does raise questions about how it is possible to charge someone in a country when the crime happened else where. Many different parties of this case have spoken out on this case with their thoughts. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-trump-deportations-el-salvador-9988b667199e1b02fc0a6a83570225c1 On Tuesday April 8, 2025 the opening statements were made the trial of a man accused of torture when working for the Gambia’s former military dictator almost 20 years ago.
