The Trump administration has halted all other refugee admissions which has caused some controversy. The group of white South Africans arrived at Dulles on May 11th and received a warm welcome from US authorities. The processing for refugees in the US often takes months or even years but this group has been processed much faster than normal. In response to why the Afrikaners had been treated differently, Trump said a “genocide” was taking place and these people had to be moved to safety as soon as possible. This is happening because of the recent law passed by the South African government that says land can be seized without consequence if it’s “equitable and in the public interest”. South Africa claims that no land has been seized under the act yet. Claims of genocide against white people in South Africa have been widely discredited.

While I am concerned about the new land law, especially since the South African government can seize land whenever they deem necessary, Musk and Trump’s claims of genocide seem shaky at best. What’s happening here isn’t genocide, it’s the forced exodus of people at worst, which would be a serious crime under international law, but nowhere close to the drastic claim of genocide. However, if we choose to accept the South African claim that no land has been taken yet, there’s nothing happening that the US needs to be concerned about. What’s more, the fact that this group of South Africans was processed way faster than some other refugees is concerning, especially since a lot of black and Afghan refugees were denied entry into the US.

There isn’t a whole lot that South Africa can do about this, other than deny the claims that a white genocide is happening and try to keep up appearances. The US is a far stronger country than it is, which means that America can do basically whatever it wants barring international law violations. The racial controversy with refugee processing happening here has been noticed by the Human Rights Watch, and both countries are facing criticism. South Africa for the land law, and Trump and Musk for the claims of genocide. The fact is, this is a messy situation that could potentially involve human rights abuses, but so far has shown no sign of them. We will have to see in the future.

A group of 59 white South Africans arrived in the US recently after allegations for racial discrimination were imposed on South Africa.
