With over half of its budget reliant on federal funds, the island is welcoming foreign companies by highlighting its exemption from tariffs, U.S. jurisdiction, tax incentives, and skilled labor. Government initiatives are focusing on re-establishing Puerto Rico as a hub for pharmaceutical and medical device industries, which once thrived under now-defunct federal tax incentives. Despite a 30% drop in manufacturing employment from 1995-2005, pharmaceutical and chemical sectors have remained strong, representing a major portion of U.S. exports. In 2024, Puerto Rico exported nearly \\$25 billion worth of goods, with pharmaceuticals making up a significant portion. However, challenges such as chronic power outages and high logistical costs, including the Jones Act requiring U.S.-flagged ships for transport, hinder investment potential. The government is addressing these by promoting alternative energy and aligning educational curriculums with industry needs. Although there is interest from 75-100 potential companies, competition from countries like Vietnam and South Korea poses hurdles, and long timelines for relocation projects have left many companies adopting a wait-and-see approach. This is a momentous moment that could hurt all sides, Puerto Rico has had to be so close to America for so long but times are changing. Looking for more international trade options could mean more conflict with America.

<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/puerto-rico-us-tariffs-manufacturing-pharmaceuticals-529be76078147a4e31f3a69686d801a2 Puerto Rico is leveraging the global trade war and U.S. tariff policies under President Trump to attract international manufacturing companies, aiming to revitalize its fragile economy.
