This has created a legal conflict in which the US is determining if the Trump administration broke the law through implementing their new deportation policies. Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and National Immigration Project have stated that these deportations are “shocking” and an “abuse of power”. The families’ lawyers and others have argued that the families did not have a fair chance to decide if they wanted the kids to remain in the US. A federal judge said that the government did not prove it had deported the girl properly. The girl’s father had wanted his daughter to stay with him in the US, but ICE claims that the mother wanted the girl to be deported with her to Honduras. The family and their lawyer decided to drop their lawsuit to give the family “space and time to consider all the options that are available to them”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article brings attention to the treatment of migrant families, including children, under current immigration policies. It also raises concerns legally since immigration enforcement has been deporting U.S. citizens who are constitutionally protected from this. This may, globally, damage US credibility as a defender of Democratic values and child welfare, again potentially straining diplomatic relations. Pressure may grow for more oversight of immigration enforcement agencies, especially ICE. Congressional hearings and independent investigations into past actions can be pursued. It is hard to see what the Trump Administration will continue to do as they receive much backlash since it is quite unpredictable, but to speculate, they may increase transparency in immigration practices while also implementing cross-agency checks to prevent wrongful deportations of citizens. Civil rights groups will continue legal actions to hold the government accountable, publicize stories to raise awareness, and lobby for humane immigration policy reforms. The child has been reunited with her family in the US, so pursuing it could have just prolonged complications with legal status. Many times, immigrant families are pressured to end legal action due to limited resources and fear of instability. Therefore, although the lawsuit has been dropped, the case brings concerns about the United States’ immigration system and its commitment to protecting human rights. As talked about in class, this is an example of how domestic policy intersects with legal or global norms. It also shows how migrant families are treated based on power dynamics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Link to article: https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/honduras-deported-child-lawsuit-dropped-d15e3cfa8d44f8eca9c87cb640f92422 A 2-year-old girl, along with two other U.S.-born kids were deported with their Honduran born mothers.
