Sugar cane production has fallen below 200,000 tons of sugar and has impacted rum production, leaving many of these businesses to not be able to produce. State-run monopoly AZCUBA planned to produce 265,000 metric tons of raw sugar this year but ultimately that fell below the 200 thousand mark. Cuba will have to import sugar to continue the production of rum within the country. The National Statistics and Information Agency reported production of sugar-based 96% ethanol alcohol went down 70%.This is further implicated by the US sanctions placed upon Cuba crippling the economy.

This is significant as a huge portion of Cuba’s economy faces economic downfall if they don’t have the sugar to be able to make rum. It could raise the prices for not only rum but also possibly cane sugar as they are a big producer of it. This could affect us and many people around the world, especially Americans who love to drink rum that is produced. If the sugar production doesn’t go back up to normal levels, prices of goods made out of this cane sugar will increase leading to higher prices here in the states. The crumbling economy of Cuba is also a huge issue as sanctions are still in place putting more pressure on the government.

Cuba could ultimately figure out a solution to this crisis as they have too much rainfall, possibly moving sugar cane inside. The US should help release some of the pressure of the crumbling economy by letting go of some of the sanctions put in place. This harms Cuba’s economy immensely and is a big issue on exporting and limit’s what Cuba is able to do. The farming will most likely have human rights abuses such as child labor and as a result of the lack of labor and food. It can result in food shortages causing starvation and people not being able to provide basic necessities for their family such as food, clothing, or a home. However, the US could step in with some humanitarian aid or at least by releasing some of the sanctions held on Cuba to support the hard working families that live on the island.

Article Link: https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/cuban-sugar-production-falls-further-rattling-rum-makers-2025-05-14/ Sugar cane production in Cuba has fallen to an extremely low level, the lowest since the 19th century.
