This came after his campaign promise to focus on the construction of residential homes due to an apparent housing crisis. Carney’s party, the Liberal Party of Canada, has pledged to reduce homelessness, improve affordability of homes and increase the volume of residential construction. The former Prime minister Justin Trudeau (also a member of LPC) saw poor approval ratings due to heightened housing prices. This comes as part of a wave of projects announced by the Prime Minister to diversify Canada’s economy with the hopes of reducing the reliance on America as tariffs hit.

The Prime Minister’s idea to begin projects that would stop reliance on the United States is smart because if Canada continued to rely on the United States it would likely see an affordability crisis in everything, not just homes. These projects should also keep Carney out of the situation that caused former Prime Minister Trudeau to resign after continued affordability issues. This event clearly came as a reaction to the past failures of the Canadian government and the disparate need to pull back from foreign trade to focus domestically on many issues that were not addressed.

While there are many stakeholders in this article, I believe the three most important are the federal government, the local governments and low income residents. The federal government will have to manage this project and many others efficiently to succeed in the push for self reliance. The local government will have to work on upsizing its processes such as police and local road projects to accommodate the large increase of residents. The low income residents will be excited to receive their promised affordable housing that they have been voting for.

This connects to Development and Sustainability because this article focuses on Canada’s push for self reliance and developing the country in the residential sector. These changes will allow Canada to sustain itself without other countries such as the United States.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canada-announces-new-federal-agency-build-affordable-housing-2025-09-14 Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that a new federal agency called Build Canada Homes, which is supported by $9.39 billion, would begin work building affordable homes.
