Roberto was a large critic of the Nicaraguan government led by Daniel Ortega. Four people connected to the murder were arrested and one of the men was likely the middle man between those who wanted Roberto dead and the murderer. Randall Zuniga, the head of Costa Rica’s judicial investigation body said that they have not apprehended the mastermind behind the murder and have so far found no link to foreign governments. Roberto was exiled from Nicaragua and criticized the government’s military response to country wide protests against the government in 2018. It is believed that hundreds of people were killed in the military’s response to the protests.

Considering the government’s response to the protests, it is definitely not far-fetched to say that there is a connection between the murder and Nicaragua’s government. This is only reinforced by the fact that many opposition leaders left the country after fears of arrest. I believe that the Nicaraguan government is likely trying to silence critics and opposition to solidify power in the country.

The three major players are the Nicaraguan government, Costa Rica’s investigators and opposition leaders. The Nicaraguan government is likely glad that he is dead regardless of if they contracted the kill or not because he was a major critic of their government. Costa Rica’s investigators are likely looking for the missing pieces of the murder since the arrests shed light on a part of the operations. The opposition leaders should be more scared than before because the murder was clearly a contracted kill and could have been connected to the fact that Roberto was a critic.

This article connects to Rights and Justice because of the search for justice in relation to the Murder of Roberto. It also connects to the rights of protesters and opposition leaders in Nicaragua.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/costa-rican-police-arrest-4-killing-nicaraguan-opposition-figure-2025-09-12 The article highlights the death of Roberto Samcam, a retired Sadanistria Major, who was killed in his home.
