On October 28, 2025, the United States Department of Defense reported that U.S. forces executed strikes on four vessels in the eastern Pacific Ocean, killing 14 alleged drug traffickers and leaving one survivor. The ships were described as “known by our intelligence apparatus, transtiting along known narco-trafficking routes, and carrying narcotics,” acording to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Mexican authorities assumed rescue operations for the lone survivor at the request of the U.S. Coast Guard. This action is part of. abroader campaign launched by the Trump administration since early september to combat maritime narcotics trafficking, including in the Caribbean a Pacific. While the pentagon released a short video of the strikes and provided little detailed evidence, the operation has provoked question about the use of millitary force in anti-drug efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This escalation of military action signals a bold shift in how the U.S. addresses drug trafficking, treating it more like a conventional conflict than a law, enforcement issue. By targeting vessels in the seas, the U.S. is starting to enter the grey area of narcotics control and international military operations. Latin American countries can perceive this event as an intrusion on sovereignty or the begining of further intervention from the U.S. Expecially towards countries like Venezuela. The lasting impact could include increased militarization on drug-trafficking routes and diplomatic friction for all countries around the Gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. will defend the strikes as necessary to protect the U.S. citizens from narcotics related harm, yet must also increase transparency by providing evidence for legal justification. Mexico, being the state that rescued the lone survivor, can leverage the collaboration to strengthen maritime protection efforts, and also demand clearer protocols to ensure better saftey for all parties involved. Other Latin American states could push back on the U.S., demanding that they coordinate more closely with them to respect there sovereignty rather than just imposing their military whenever they feel fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event directly connects to the class in the topic of hard power. The U.S. Military’s decision to strike drug vessels in the easter pacific is a clear example of hard power, as they used direct military force to achieve policy goals. By acting unilaterally beyond their own borders, the U.S. demonstrates how states sometimes asserts authority through coercive means rather than diplomacy or soft power. This fact also raises question about sovereignty, especially when determining if the U.S. action undermines the the sovereignty of other Latin Amaerican States.
