This comment is being compared to his previous comments on Nicolás Maduro and the ensuing damage done to Venezuela. This threat is also being exacerbated with other US representatives talking more and more about war with Venezuela and Colombia. Petro responded to these threats at first diplomatically, but he would later say that Trump “should be ousted.”. This is a reverse of what usually happens with the US saying this about Latin American countries in the past. Following this Trump put Petro on the “Specially designated nationals” list, which is used for terrorists, traffickers, and kleptocrats. This huge accusation led to protests outside the US embassy in Bogotá, threatening relations between the 2 countries. Petro has had a previous reputation of defiance, being a former guerilla he used political opposition to his advantage. Petro believes he can be the face of the anti trump operations globally, and use this as a popularity boost. Before all of this Colombia blocked 2 deportation flights from the US, which led to new tariffs on Colombia, further damaging relations. Petro would end up protesting outside the UN telling US troops to disobey Trump. Petro only stands to gain popularity by defying Trump, as his policies have caused a lot of damage behind the big talk. The US has also decided to cut off Colombian intelligence agencies, making communication even harder.

This article is important because the outcome can completely change the course for Colombia and the US. It highlights how both leaders just keep raising the stakes and fighting. The US no longer conversing with Colombian intelligence will only make stopping drugs from entering the US harder, as both states combined efforts have been what has held it together so far. The tariffs will also have a huge impact on Colombia as 1/3 of their exports go to the US, and if a huge percentage of their sales go away they’ll have to find a different method. That method would be to sell to other countries, and switch sales to something not affected by tariffs that would be of the illegal variety in the US. These decisions from the US will only increase coca production and lead to more drugs on the streets of the US. The posturing from both players will only be a detriment to both economies. The best course of action from the US would be to reopen relations with Colombia and work with their government despite disagreements. Colombia would be best off if Petro stopped looking for a fight, even if he is right or not. Cooperation from both can stop a possible war and increase in drug trafficking.

This conflict connects to security threats, as it threatens: inter-state conflict, intra-state conflict, and organized crime. Both states are taking this as an aggressive or provocative action against themselves, and so they are responding to such with more escalation which will lead to conflict and crime.

Link to article: https://latinamericanpost.com/americas/politics/u-s-colombia-showdown-petro-trump-and-the-high%e2%80%91risk-politics-of-bravado/ Recently, Donald Trump called the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, an “illegal drug leader,”.
