The article highlights that although murder rates are down, it is unwise for the President to say that it is because of her rule that the numbers have dropped. Also, using averages doesn’t represent that the entire nation is doing better. One area may have 100 deaths today and another state may have 0 but the average would still be 50. For example only 7 states in Mexico made up for more than half of all the crime, and their rates largely are not dropping. Although there have been many arrest and the police have made many blows to the cartels this means very little when you realise that this is just something that may have an affect on the Cartels not that the Cartels are magically defeated. The article finishes by talking about what actual pacification would look like- there would be less homicides everywhere, there would be improvements in forensic fields, and a more efficient state prosecutors’ office.

I think that the article is correct in its assumption that just because two lines on a graph match doesn’t meant that they are causing each other. However I do think that the article is to harsh on their expectations of peace in Mexico as seen in the last few paragraphs of the article. However they are correct in their vain wishes. The continuation of cartel dominance in Mexico has caused the state to become weaker but to think more globally it has caused surrounding nations to react in different ways to Mexico. For example the USA has largely stopped being so open with Mexico and now treats it as a nation that houses terrorists, others like guatemala and belize are weakened with Mexico where cartels inflict hurt where they please.

The Mexican government could and most likely will keep trying to convince their people that their nation is becoming safer through skewed statistics, they also could show the real numbers and try to use them as justification to start escalating the war with the cartels. The cartels will most likely not be to dettered by this campaign, if anything they will continue to get bigger due to people having a false sense of security about their nation.

Propaganda/Disinformation would be good topics to circle back to when thinking about this topic. For example the Mexican state has said that they are making the nation much safer. Although this is skewed by not telling the people about the other sorts of violent crimes, Disinformation. Also, when the Mexican state posts photos of lots of guns that have been confiscated along with tons of drugs etc. this doesn’t show the overall effectiveness of the state but just a small successful part of it, Propaganda.

Link to article:https://latinamericanpost.com/analysis-en/mexicos-pacification-myth-falling-homicides-hide-rising-disappearances-and-shifting-violence/ As Mexico celebrates a 37% drop in homicides and a slew of positive statistics there is many other factors not being included like extortion, attempted murder, and kidnapping.
