This move from China is to establish new relationships in the region, and their presence. This aid ship is being seen as an informal threat by China in the western hemisphere, invoking the Monroe Doctrine of the US. This is also relevant as the US is claiming the need to take back control of places like the Panama canal to stop Chinese influence. With these points, the US is trying to push out any power that is not already established in the Western Hemisphere. Combine this with rising tensions between the US and Venezuela, The Caribbean is a powder keg about to explode.

This event will lead to a larger effect on the region in that Latin American countries will have to choose whether or not to have a greater participation in the global economy, and not primarily the US. The arrival of the Chinese aid ship is not just for aid, but a symbol of Chinese and outside participation in the Caribbean economy and politics. With this move from China also likely to be in the hope of aided countries receding the recognition of Taiwan. But China’s new move is likely to lead to retaliation and blocking by the US. So Latin American countries need the aid that the US isn’t providing but don’t want to get on their bad side, so it will be a balancing act between the US and China. The US should let China into the region for economic relations as the US is the top dog, and China’s investment will only better the region and benefit the US. China should remain on the course they are on. Latin states should continue to participate in connection to the US, but reap the rewards of new investors like China.

This event is being connected to the Monroe Doctrine, as the US wants to prevent global intervention in the region. This can also be connected to Roosevelt Corollary, as the US is threatening local countries that participate and receive from China. China’s participation in the region also connects to Taiwan’s recognition. If Taiwan loses recognition, and finds itself under the CCPs control, it could break the US’s first island chain leading to further Chinese global influence.

Link to article: https://latinamericanpost.com/americas/aid-with-a-flag-what-chinas-hospital-ship-signals-in-latin-america-and-the-caribbean/ A Chinese hospital ship has recently arrived in the Caribbean to provide aid to hurricane damaged countries.
