The Treasury Department has named the Gulf Clan of Colombia an FTO following an executive order from President trump making Fentanyl a WMD. This has reopened tensions and created a much more hostile environment in Colombia. This has also caused backlash seeing as just two weeks prior President Petro and the Gulf Clan were coming to peace agreements that would have saw the beginning stages of d’armement from the Gulf Clan. Now that they have been labeled an FTO there is little trust between the American Friendly Colombians and the Gulf Clan. This is also seen as the US has continued to launch strikes on suspected drug running boats. In addition when talking about launching land based strikes on Venezuela President Trump also hinted that these strikes may include launching on the three known cocaine factory’s in Colombia. Finally, it is explained that the FTO label allows for the US to freeze any assets in US institutions and gives US prosecutions more material support making peace talks with Colombia and there for Venezuela that much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think that President Trump’s label of FTO on the Gulf Clan does more harm than it does good. While it does allow for us to prosecute those involved and to interdict the actions of the Gulf Clan more efficiently does it help to solve the real end goal. Seeing as the presented goal was to get the Gulf Clan and the other splinter groups to stop putting Cocaine into the US, if anything the order is just going to force them to become more innovative and therefore harder to stop farther down the road.Its also interesting how Trump said that every one of the ships that he blows up saves 25000 American lives, while not giving any evidence that there was even Fentanyl on the ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Americans have put the ball into the court of Maduro and Petro and also of the Gulf Clan. They most likely will continue to strike the supposed drug running ships, I don’t see a way other than the other parties backing down that the US takes the initiative of lowering tensions. Colombia will most likely join Venezuela in trying to deter US aggression in the area. Lastly the Gulf Clan will most likely throw the peace talks down the drain and will ready themselves for a war or armed conflict with the US, in whatever capacity it means for them. They will also most likely not stop making and supplying the cocaine but will just find more covert ways up supplying it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I read the article I could clearly see a connection to sovereignty and to hard power. For one you can see how the US trying to get involved in an internal issue of another state without its consent is a clear violation of its sovereignty. Lastly, the US has used threats of violence and violence itself in order to disrupt the actions of the new FTO the Gulf Clan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
