Trump and Petro would talk over the phone and come to mostly positive conclusions, but claims of Petro’s involvement in the drug trade did not go over well. Previous conflicts between the 2 presidents have been about deportation flights to Colombia and the US’s actions on Venezuela. Situations like these have led to increased tensions between the 2 countries and repeated threats. With Colombia’s upcoming election the stakes are much higher. Depending upon what happens leading up to the election between Petro and Trump, this could affect the election results in Colombia. Currently the leftist Iván Cepeda has taken the lead for president, and is likely to win this election if nothing goes wrong.

This article is important because it shows more US involvement in Latin America beyond Venezuela. Showing the US is truly claiming the Monroe Doctrine and returning to focus on the Western Hemisphere. These claims from Trump also set a precedent for other states in the region not to disobey the US’s authority. This event also shows countries in the region willingness to push back, which could lead to more conflict than the US anticipates. In this situation Petro’s goal should be to not push back too much to ensure Cepeda’s election. Trump should stop accusing world leaders of unproven things, and instead work even harder with the Colombian government to prevent drug trafficking.

This conflict is mostly on the individual level, with the presidents of both countries being the main reason for argument. It also connects to regional disagreement and shifting powers. The upcoming election will decide if a regional conflict could possibly happen. Whether real trade wars or diplomatic rows will happen is up for debate, as this could just be a short tif.

Link to article: https://latinamericanpost.com/analysis-en/colombia-at-the-crossroads-as-trump-threats-meet-election-fever/ Following President Trump’s challenge against Colombia’s sovereignty, Gustavo Petro of Colombia condemned Trump’s statement of invasion of his country.
