According to Reuters, he met with Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, before and after meeting with U.S. officials in Washington. Batista told U.S. officials that Rodríguez seems open to foreign investment in Venezuela’s oil and gas industry and willing to work with the U.S. His family’s energy company, Fluxus, is also exploring business opportunities in Venezuela and has already expanded energy assets in Bolivia and Argentina. Batista met with Nicolás Maduro in November before Maduro was detained this month by U.S. forces on drug trafficking charges. After meeting Rodríguez, Batista returned to Washington to brief U.S. officials. While Venezuela’s energy resources are large, the political and economic risks remain high.

I think Batista is acting like a diplomat because the U.S. cannot fully communicate with Venezuela right now. There is no U.S. embassy, and relations with the new leadership are still unclear. Recent easing of U.S.-Brazil tensions may have signaled to Batista that this was a good moment to step in, especially since his family’s business was affected by past U.S. sanctions on Brazil. Trump’s approach to policy is very business-focused, so it makes sense that a businessman like Batista would be trusted to handle talks that involve energy and investment. At the same time, Batista is not neutral and is likely acting in his own interests as well.

The U.S. government may be cautious about trusting Batista since he is not an official representative and is motivated by profit. However, Trump may see these talks as progress toward gaining U.S. access to Venezuelan energy. The Venezuelan government could view Batista’s involvement as a way to attract foreign investment and signal openness to economic growth, while still being careful to maintain control over its resources. Drug cartels may also try to take advantage of the uncertainty to protect trafficking routes or gain influence over companies entering Venezuela, which could further complicate the situation.

Some of the geopolitical considerations that Batista and the U.S. had to think about regarding Venezuela was “Does the location affect my energy concerns?” and “Does the location offer lucrative economic opportunity?” Venezuela offers oil for the Americans to consume and economic opportunities as Batista and U.S. companies like Chevron go to extract oil in Venezuela. Additionally, as we see America’s grand strategy shift, we see other actors start to change their strategy as well. This is seen with Brazilian and American ties easing as Brazil see the economic opportunity with the U.S. becoming more focused on the Western Hemisphere.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/brazil-billionaire-batista-met-with-venezuelas-rodriguez-us-officials-2026-01-14/ Brazilian billionaire Joesley Batista has been acting as an informal middleman between Venezuela and the United States.
