The Artemis II mission marks a major milestone in NASA’s efforts to return humans to the Moon and eventually travel to Mars. This mission is the first crewed flight of the Artemis program and involves a team of astronauts from the United States and Canada. Unlike the previous Artemis I mission, which was uncrewed, Artemis II will send astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft on a journey around the Moon before safely returning to Earth. The mission is designed to test critical life-support systems, navigation, and overall spacecraft performance with humans on board.

The flight has captured global attention because it represents renewed momentum in space exploration and international cooperation. Canada’s participation highlights the collaborative nature of modern space missions, as multiple countries contribute technology, funding, and expertise. The mission also serves as preparation for future lunar landings, which aim to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon.

Beyond its technical goals, Artemis II has symbolic importance as it inspires a new generation and demonstrates advancements in science and engineering. It also reinforces the role of space exploration in strengthening diplomatic ties and competition among nations.

The Artemis II mission can be effectively used as a case study for the IB Global Politics class concerning the connection between soft power and international cooperation.

The participation of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen among three Americans can be regarded as a liberal perspective on international relations. In this way, the USA applies soft power to create a partnership based on values and technological interdependence by pooling resources. The “Global Commons” project becomes more legitimate since the participation of other countries helps prove the effectiveness of the USA’s role in leading it. At the same time, Canada receives the opportunity for development, which was not possible without assistance from the USA.

In contrast, in terms of realism, Artemis II is a clear indication of the capabilities of the state that seeks to demonstrate its superiority over other nations. The “New Space Race” between the USA and China shows how geopolitical status is expressed through technological achievements. The mission can be viewed as both the creation of a public good and a signal for others of being able to protect their territory with sufficient power.
