It has been reported that North Korea is willing to talk to the United States about giving up its nuclear weapons following the 2018 Olympic games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, has agreed to refrain from conducting nuclear and missile tests while engaging in dialogue with South Korea. North Korea has clarified that if the military threat to their country is resolved, then it will have no reason to have nuclear weapons. This announcement is a shock to the US and Asia because only a couple months ago, North Korea threatened that it could “wipe the United States off the face of the Earth.” This leaves many people to be skeptical of Kim Jong Un’s words and some believe that this is just talk while US President, Donald Trump says that he believes his words saying, “I believe they are sincere. I hope they are sincere. We’ll find out.” Because many believe that it’s just talk, the US has stated that they want concrete actions towards denuclearization by North Korea before there are any talks between the two countries. I think that this announcement from North Korea is a good step towards the future but like most, I think that this may just be all talk. I think that North Korea is just trying to put on a friendly face for the time being but like President Trump said, we’ll just have to see.
