This past week has been full of new and exciting news about the newfound relationship between North and South Korea. The DMZ appears to be de-weaponizing, propaganda speakers are being taken down on both sides, and US prisoners inside the communist state of North Korea are set to be freed. I am very hopeful for what the future brings for the peninsula. But as Ronald Reagan said after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1989, we must trust the new relationship, but verify that nothing sinister is taking place behind the scenes. I am hopeful of the future but also remain skeptical of the possibility of peace between the two nations. I think it would be premature for the US military to leave the peninsula until the threat has been totally neutralized, no matter how long it takes. We must remain vigilant and wary, yet hopeful in these extraordinary times.
