The growing tensions between the U.S and China are concerning to me, especially after President Trump accused the Chinese of attempting to meddle in the upcoming midterm elections. While not mentioned in any of the articles I posted, the U.S. also recently arrested a Chinese man on a student visa on the grounds of spying, which makes the situation even more complex. The trade war, both countries’ choices of dealing with Taiwan and North Korea, Trump’s accusations, and the arrest of a spy, to me, are all notches on the fuse that is the ticking time bomb of Chinese-U.S. relations. We all are well aware that the U.S. president doesn’t really know how to be a president, and the UN summit attested to that, when he was laughed at by world leaders for saying that his administration has made some of the “greatest achievements in the history of the United States.” Trump not knowing much about international diplomacy may very well just be digging the U.S. a deeper hole that’s going to be incredibly difficult to crawl out of. The fact that China and Russia get along, bonding over communism and what not, and both aren’t on the best of terms with the United States could also bring about its own set of issues if some of the tensions are not resolved soon. A question that could be raised is what are Trumps motives behind accusing the Chinese government of interfering in the U.S. midterm elections? Is it because there was actually evidence that someone attempted to meddle in the elections, or is this just Trump trying to pin the blame on someone because it appears at the moment that the Democrats are going to take the House and maybe even the Senate? Only time will tell, but I have a firm feeling that there is no basis to Trump’s claims and that the situation and relations between the United States and China are only going to become more explosive.
