The US envoy in charge of North Korean affairs has held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov in Moscow.
Stephen Biegun met with the Russian official on Tuesday. The US State Department has said the special representative for North Korea will also visit Paris and Brussels to meet with government officials there.
Biegun accompanied Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on his trip to Pyongyang this month for talks on holding a 2nd summit between US President Donald Trump and the North’s leader Kim Jong Un.
The 2 sides agreed that their countries will arrange the summit at an early date. Biegun has been put in charge of working-level talks on the matter.
However, divisions persist. Washington maintains that Pyongyang must first take concrete steps toward denuclearization. North Korea is demanding that the US officially declare an end to the Korean War.
Russia, meanwhile, is strengthening cooperation with China and North Korea. It argues that UN sanctions on the North should be eased.
