Australia and China have been continuously trading with each other benefiting both of their economic needs. China is Australia’s largest importer of iron ore, copper, wool and wine. With this constant flow of trade of Australia’s resources, Australia has become one of the “world’s top economies”. However, these high levels of economic success for Australia is primarily only because of the consistent trade with China. China is the main reason Australia is having this major economic success. Now the biggest and most angst filled fear of Australians is losing their current economic successes. The threats to these continuously increasing is, not only the fear of Chinese boycotts on Australian resources that would demolish the extremely beneficial economy that Australia resides in currently, but it another fear is the changing of Australian prime ministers, and with changes in prime ministers comes changes with political policies.
In my opinion I think it was a very poor decision on the Australians to dedicate so much of its resources on the economic trade relations with China, I think this primarily because of the major difference in identity between Australia and China. The government are different forms, they are allied with different countries, their ethnic groups are completely different, and their political ideologies are entirely different. This lack of identity between these two countries was basically foreshadowing potential discourses in the future which being a prominent fear in the eyes of many Australians, and rightfully so. Having such a great and flourishing economy which is being fueled many by the trade with an economic power house that is China it’s understandable of why people would be afraid of the Chinese potentially boycotting Australian goods because of something an Australian ally did. The other rational fear of the Australians is the change in prime ministers. Having a constant change of Prime ministers brews the fear of whether or not this PM will start leaning in on more on less external trading and more building infrastructure ideologies, which will be a major deviation from the current economic policy of Australia and will most likely halt all economic process for awhile in Australia. Again it was a very poor decision for Australia to depend majorly on a country that is the brunt of their economic power, with little identifications between them.
