Philippines War On Drugs

In the Philippines, there is a lethal war on drugs that has been enacted by their President, Rodrigo Duterte. Recently, a lawyer leading the charge against this lethal drug war was shot three times and killed while he was leaving work. This was the thirty-fourth lawyer that has been killed since Duterte has come to power and pursued this war. Benjamin Ramos was 56 and deeply respected by his fellow coworkers. This event goes to show the political tension and violence currently engulfing the people of the Philippines. To have such an unrest over a political action that is causing innocent civilians to lose their lives is mind blowing. Every country has its issues that cause tension, but very few result in government and private employees leaving their families in the morning and never making it back home. Even for the countries that have wars there is an understanding of side versus side, but this country seems to have a President that will eliminate anyone opposed to him. This shows the lack of personal freedom within the country. The inability for the people to speak out against a government movement inhibits the progress in their society. That isn’t the sign of a strong figure either, rather a man grasping for power and influence by imposing fear on his people. All that can come of this is unneeded bloodshed and unrest in surrounding countries that associate with the Philippines. From an economic standpoint, there is money being used to take the lives of people standing up for what they believe is inhumane. Not to mention the millions of dollars being spent on salaries of officers to crack down and take out any person with a relationship or ties to the drug epidemic within their borders. Overall, this is horrific and shows the corruption and lack of freedom in the Philippines.
