international relations simulation reflection

I played the role of one of the main speakers/representatives for my country in the UN simulation. I was often the one to speak on behalf of my country in front of the room of delegates and I was influential in debating and discussing the possible resolutions with other countries during un moderated caucuses. I felt fairly prepared for the simulation because I had some model UN experience, and DE International Relations has also helped prepare me for what is most important to a country’s national security and national interest. My country achieved our goal for the most part, in that we maintained regional stability with minimal involvement and the US did not become heavily involved in our region. During un moderated caucuses I kept discussions and negotiations on track, and took notes that ultimately aided our country in inputting our interests into the final resolution. I asked questions when I needed clarification and I didn’t shy away from confrontation with the other delegates despite them being my friends and peers in real life. Several times I spoke in front of all the delegations during moderated caucuses in order to question the intentions of other organizations and to achieve clarification on the motives of their actions. I also challenged several country’s positions (most often the United States), during both moderated and un moderated caucuses. I felt additionally prepared for the simulation because of International Relations, which gave me the background knowledge necessary to make informed decisions and statements as well as the confidence to speak in front of a group, as IR frequently featured discussions as a class. The class also required presentations in front of the class about international politics, which was a necessary skill for this simulation. I enjoyed the exercise immensely and feel that it prepared me for similar circumstances in college courses and potential jobs in my future. I feel that I was ultimately successful and a beneficial member of my delegation and I am proud of the progress and efforts we made.
