The Chinese ambassador to India, Sun Weidong, has alluded that the relations between India and China have the potential of being much more widespread than the bilateral scope they currently have. In a recent virtual meeting, the ambassador voiced that a sound relationship with India is necessary to maintain world stability, and will bring them both many positive opportunities. Sun believes that if they look past their differences and work together they will continue to shift the balance of power in the world. By working with other regions and gaining more insight, they will be able to deepen the relationship between the two countries.
The deepening of relations between China and India and the global effect that Sun Weidong has described may mean that the United States will be sharing its title of the global super power with China within the next few years. With the cooperation of other regions in support of China and India’s goal of expanding their bilateral relationship, the two countries will strengthen each other and emerge on the world stage with a lot more recognition. However, support from other countries may be hard for them to achieve due to China’s threatening socialist government and conflicts surrounding India. I believe that if this new relationship is able to form, there will be big changes in the economic status of China and India; they will most likely be able to gain more trade partners and ultimately more allies.
China and India have the potential to create their own very large Economic IGO, a concept we have discussed in class. However, while they could also create their own, there is also the question of if they would replace one of the Economic IGOs that already exist; for example, the World Trade Organization or the International Monetary Fund. By creating this multinational global actor, they will be able to control the trade market in Southeast Asia and increase or decrease tariffs. At some point they could most likely expand their IGO to other countries and create even more of an international IGO. Another theme we discussed would be them emerging as a global super power alongside the United States.
