As tensions continue to rise between China and Taiwan. China is continuing to not recognize Taiwan as a state and claiming it as part of its own country. The President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, on saturday promised to strengthen Taiwan’s defences. President Tsai mentioned in a speech given during Taiwan’s national day that their goal is to enhance it’s capacities for asymmetric warfare. Since 2016 when President Tsai was elected, Taiwan has been under increasingly pressure by Beijing such as air force activity has increased with the Chinese crossing over the Taiwan Strait. The United States has taken a stand and is backing up Taiwan, they have been pushing Taiwan to modernise its military in hopes to act as a “porcupine”, small but hard to attack.
With tensions between the United States and China always being rough, there’s no question why China would want to claim Taiwan as their own. With Taiwan being allies with the United States it allows the US to have an easy access point right next to China where they can send troops, ships, supplies etc. to help prevent China from attacking. Without the help of the United States, Taiwan would desperately be out of competition with China since they are an island not possessing many resources. With tensions continuing to rise, it is prevalent that China will continue to press into Taiwan to return to its governance of China.
Taiwan being a non-recognized state by China has been problematic for many years. With no end in site we will continue to see territorial disputes, government disputes, and small battles between the two countries. With the United States being somewhat of a mediator they recognize Taiwan as a state therefore we are backing them with support, supplies, and man power. The Democratic people republic of China has continued over the many years to try and control other areas around them such as Hong Kong, Tibet, and Taiwan. With not knowing what will come, we can only wait to see what will happen to these small states with the help of the United Nations and the United States.
