(was not the same article I used originally, but I found this one on the same topic)
Joshua Wong, one of the leading organizers of the Hong Kong protests last year has pleaded guilty and is likely facing 5 years of imprisonment. The protests were sparked by Hong Kong’s entanglement with Beijing, causing people to fear that their democratic rights would be stripped away. Many people say that the new security law (passed after Wong and his comrades were arrested) proves this fact, as this makes it easier to punish pro-democracy protesters. Since they were arrested before it was passed, it saves them from the possibility of a life sentence, although Wong will still face charges of organizing and taking part in unauthorised demonstrations. Although he faces these charges and the possibility of prison, Wong’s resolve is unchanged, “we will continue to fight for freedom- and now is not the time for us to kowtow to Beijing and surrender”.
I loosely followed the protests as they were happening, and I thought the tactics the demonstrators used to avoid detection and fight back against the police were really creative. The Hong Kong protests helped make some of the blueprint for the BLM movement in the US this year, some protestors used similar tactics that they used in Hong Kong. As a very pro-democracy American, I hope that the protestors voices are heard and that the security law is overturned, though I don’t see that happening any time soon.
