Hong Kong Arrests 53 for plot to “overthrow” government in latest crackdown on dissent

Another round of arrests has taken place in Hong Kong, after an unofficial vote in opposition to current legislation was organized. 53 people were arrested in raids in 72 premises. These arrests were supported by Beijing and justified to them because they saw the vote as an attempt to ‘overthrow the government’. Many countries, including the UK, have spoken out against China’s swift authoritarian turn. The author predicts that the US will also take a stance on this, with Biden preparing to take office, his administration will likely take action against the chinese communist party and their actions in Hong Kong. The crisis in Hong Kong I think is a really good example of how authoritarian governments take over and get rid of democratic practices. These string of arrests are really concerning as it comes following an attempted vote, which is the main basis of democracy. While the official vote was postponed due to COVID, I think this reaction to the unofficial one carried out is very concerning and outwardly anti-democracy. This is a very clear sign of authoritarianism and communism spreading into Hong Kong. I hope that either the UK or the Biden administration will take action in order to restore democratic practices in Hong Kong.
