China has recently increased its military demonstrations in Taiwan territory; demonstrating the country’s capabilities to form a blockade and attack the territory. It’s reported that China has made replicas of certain places in Taiwan to practice invading and attacking them. These efforts are deeply worrying to Taiwan, as while they are technically claimed by China, they are a democratic and self sufficient country. However, the Chinese military outweighs them in power by a lot, as the Chinese military is one of the strongest in the world. The United States has stated that they will continue in their efforts to support Taiwan throughout these circumstances.

The United States and China have a lot of tension between each other, and are very commonly involved in some sort of diplomatic conflict. If the United States were to become directly involved with Taiwan, especially in the case of the military when China executes these speculated attacks, it would create a substantial amount of increased tension, as it would probably be seen from the Chinese perspective as a direct attack from the United States. It would probably be best for the United States to take a hands-off approach to this issue, by sending arms, money, and resources, rather than troops or military power, as that could be seen as even a declaration of war.

By supporting Taiwan, the United States is demonstrating the grand strategy of liberal hegemony. The United States acts as hegemon, and Taiwan is at risk from another power, so they become involved. This can be through military, arms, financial support, or even just vocal support. However they do it, it is seen as direct involvement to keep China in check, therefore making it an example of liberal hegemony. It’s unlikely the US could use a strategy of offshore balancing with Taiwan, as the island is not strong enough to keep China in check.
