In a measure aimed towards improving bilateral ties between India and China, the Indian Ambassador emphasized the complete military disengagement from eastern Ladakh. The hope is that once troops are disengaged, and the situation is not actively volatile along the border, peace and tranquility will open the gate for diplomatic resolution between the two Asian giants. The process of disengagement only begun after an intense stand-off between Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control in 2019, leading to the need for diplomatic and military discussion regarding the restoration of peace along the border. The complete disengagement in the Pangong Lake area called attention to the need for the resolution of conflict along the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. The Indian External Affairs Minister has stated that working towards broader peace and tranquility can only occur following disengagement along friction points.

Eastern Ladakh has geostrategic significance, as it is situated between Gilgit-Baltistan in the west (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir), part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and Aksai Chin in the east, where a strategic Chinese road passes through. In recent decades, China has taken aggressive action in efforts to consolidate its dominance over many different regions; establishing control over Eastern Ladakh would contribute greatly to securing its economic position in the South Asian region. The Line of Actual Control between India and Pakistan is a hotly debated over demarcation, with both sides vying for complete control. While disengagement may aid in facilitating diplomatic discussion to find a resolution to the question of control, it is not likely to be an easy solution. India, the other major giant, is not likely to easily give up its own position in Kashmir.
