Despite pressure from China during a time of high tensions between Washington and Beijing, the U.S. congress recently passed new guidelines that provides more freedom within U.S. and Taiwan relations. This new occurrence formalizes the increased verbal support the U.S. has been demonstrating for Taiwan.
These new guidelines make it possible for U.S. officials to meet with Taiwanese representatives within U.S. government buildings, something that was prohibited in the past. Previously the US held back from large demonstrations of support for Taiwan, due to concern over a reaction from Beijing. Yet, this new legislation was passed during soaring tension between the U.S. and China due to multiple disagreements and actions. Additionally, last month Palau, the U.S. ambassador, became the highest ranking U.S. diplomat to visit Taiwan in 42 years.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office of the United States, which plays the role of an embassy for Taiwan, expressed happiness over new guidelines and viewed it as a reflection of bipartisan and strong relationships. The U.S. and Taiwan collaborate on issues related to global health, space, trade, and promoting democracy.
Under the Taiwan Relations Act approved by Congress the U.S. is required to provide support to Taiwan through supplying weapons for self defense. Recently, Taiwan has reported aircrafts from Beijing and active aircraft carriers performing drills in waters near Taiwan. China is attempting to establish its authority in the region and demonstrate it’s power to the world, striving to cement itself as a world hegemon. However, with the U.S. demonstrating stronger support for Taiwan, it is unclear if Beijing will continue to make aggressive moves.
While China has developed a large military, it have not fought in a conflict since the 1970s. Beijing sees Taiwan as an opportunity to demonstrate their strength to the entire world. However, if Taiwan and its allies fight back, the unexperienced Chinese military may face defeat, resulting in Beijing experiencing embarrassment on the world stage.
