The US is pushing for the United Nations (UN) Security Council to put more sanctions on North Korea following Pyongyang’s (North Korea’s Capital) third missile test since January 5, 2022. The missile test was done in defiance of the United State’s previous push for imposing more sanctions on North Korea. The US first started pushing sanctions on North Korea’s missile programmes in 2006 but have been stalled since Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump met at a summit in Hanoi in February 2019. Current President Biden says that he is willing to reopen discussions with North Korea but nothing has happened yet. North Korea continued to build their nuclear program despite worsening economic situations in the country.

I feel that North Korea is a big threat to the United States. With North Korea building up their missile programs it can prove to be a danger to anyone across the globe after a test held in 2017 showed that the missiles have the potential to go anywhere. The countries that have the biggest threat against them if North Korea does not get more sanctions are South Korea and Japan. South Korea is a little less at risk then Japan because the US has put more military equipment and technology in the country in order to help protect them from North Korea. Due to these growing threats I feel that North Korea does need more sanctions against them in order to help prevent them from launching potential nuclear missiles at other countries wiping them out.

This relates back to class due to the topic of geopolitical power and alliances. The US is a major power and North Korea an unstable and serious threat. The US is also aligning itself with South Korea and Japan in an attempt to try and prevent North Korea from being able to expand and strengthen. This is because it is not only a threat to South Korea and Japan for North Korea to strengthen, but also for the US. North Korea is currently one of the biggest threats against the US. This is partly due to the fact that it is for the most part unknown whether or not North Korea has nuclear missiles alongside the missiles being tested currently.
