This article covers a breach in India’s security by a Chinese hacker group. The Chinese hackers targeted India’s power grid utilizing spyware that was installed into the grid. While the source of the spyware has not been located it is thought to be through India’s camera system. China has made clear in various statements that the group is working outside of the government’s influence and that they are not in any way involved with the actions of this group. Going on, Chinese forgin minister Zhao Lijian would state that China adamantly opposes cyber attacks and is seeking to put an end to them. Despite these stern warnings from the government the hackers have been attempting to breach India’s power grids security for almost a year as is evident by the dormant spyware found last year in another sector of India’s power grid. A conclusion many have drawn is that the hackers work in tandem with the government and are sharing the information gathered by the breaches. These attacks have only amplified the growing tensions between China and India over border disputes. India’s response has largely been damage control to their own citizens. India has stated that it has measures in place to prevent outside influence over the nation’s infrastructure. Experts believe that the attack served mainly to find potential targets to strike that would cripple India’s infrastructure in the event of an armed conflict. This breach is simply the latest in a long line of cyber attacks by Chinese affiliated hackers to destabilize rival countries, China has already done similar attacks and probes in Taiwan as well as in Hong Kong during the riots. While China has stated that the hackers are not working with the government it is difficult to believe that the two are not affiliated in some way. India has stated that their system is robust and able to withstand attacks from forigen nations, however with the number of successful breaches in recent years will undoubtedly call that claim into question.
