Since the beginning of the was in Ukraine, China took a more neutral stance neither condemning or supporting the provocation from Russia. That is, until recently. Foreign Minister Wang Yi, in a recent conference at the Chinese Capital, stated that China plans to deepen ties with Russia, and make “historic strides forward” in Chinese-Arab relations. Joint naval drills have between the two countries have been noticed, and as trade continues, the countries are approaching their $200B goal at a significant pace. This is not the only trade agreement that has made a jump in progress, however. A recent visit made by Xi Jinping to the China-Gulf Cooperation Summit, has resulted in the confirmation of China’s plan to further become more self-sufficient, claiming that, despite the US’s constant “Bullying”, supply chains will not be dismantled and the cooperation between the middle east will help stimulate the Chinese Economy.
China has a rather different perspective on this trade agreement, and the results that will occur from outward cooperation with Russia. Unlike other countries, especially those in the west, China views the agreement as a way to develop peace, and prosperity. Although many reporters disagree, as even just recently the tides between China and Russia have allowed many Russian forces, which were located in the far East, across the borders allowing access to Ukraine. I see this connection that has made as the final stance on where China lies in the war, and I think that the reason these agreements have been made only recently is because of the developing position that Russia has in Ukraine. Currently, Putin is in a difficult position, where he cannot seem to further occupy Ukraine, but he also cannot retreat, as doing so could ruin his reputation and power. Turning to China for financial support, even if not directly for war, shows that Russia is currently putting all effort into ensuring that this war will not be lost.
Both national interests, and political ideals in China and Russia alone are enough to support a trade agreement. From a realist perspective, it can be seen that countries with similarities will work together to help better themselves, and China perfectly fits the mold. The Chinese economy is heavily dependent on exports, and in Russia’s declining economic situation allows for a perfect opportunity to leech on a vulnerable state in need of supplies. While I honestly think that China has no true interest in Ukraine, I believe that through working together with Russia, they will be able to obtain trust, and sense of ownership should Russia win. Allowing for mutual benefit, and sense of ownership, allowing for favors, money, land, weapons, aid, etc. should China need it in the future. In a way, they seem to be putting all of their eggs into every basket, insuring their benefit no matter what happens.
