The US and Japan have announced a greater and revamped security cooperation against the PRC in regards to China’s hostility towards Taiwan “We agree that the PRC is the greatest shared strategic challenge that we and our allies and partners face,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This revamped defense is more about increasing capabilities rather than a larger force with the US providing anti-ship missiles and increasing the area they secure. They will also plan on having troops more focused on intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. President Biden and Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida will meet Friday and discuss the security, economy, and the controlling of shipping semiconductors to china. All of this comes as Japan has spent 2% of its GDP on defense for its military and missiles, buffing up its military as China has become increasingly hostile towards taiwan.
We all heard the news of China’s increasing hostility towards not only Taiwan but its allies and anyone that shows support for Taiwan such as the situation not too long ago with Nancy pelosi. Due to this, Japan, which has been a pretty pacifistic country in the contemporary world, has spent an entire 2& of its domestic GDP on its military. This is obviously a way to show china that they will not be running over japan if they choose to invade or attack taiwan and with this new deal between japan and the US japanese forces will have more mobility and intelligence for quicker response time. I believe china will probably release a statement at some point in the next few weeks about the west hegemonic influence and how they are poking their noses in business they don’t belong as china has to no one’s surprise never enjoyed the west anywhere near it or its support of taiwan and alliance with japan.especially considering they aren’t that far apart. Jaan has stated their belief that China isn’t going to seriously invade Taiwan so this has been more a show of force for them and a strengthening of ties with the US.
This connects back to what we discussed in class because it deals with defensive realism with Japan by increasing its domestic defense and increasing its security but isn’t outwardly hostile to anyone. Japan is increasing the missiles it has and its forces and the American troops stationed there but it’s all inwards not spreading out but still by doing this they make China think twice about attacking Taiwan because Japan has become stronger without going to war with anyone or taking territory. Another thing this connects back to is and quite obviously alliances. Jaan dislikes china and likes taiwan and it’s the same with the US so they partner up in defense of taiwan which also explores relationships between themselves and alliances they can make whether military like this article was about or economic like trade
