Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has recently come out and said that an “independent rapporteur” will be investigating Chinese election interference. Trudeau also says that this issue of foreign interference is a very important matter, and challenges Canada’s sovereignty. According to the Canadian government, this investigator will be looking over the 2019 and 2021 federal elections, for any foreign interference. China has denied any involvement, going as far to say that Canada’s claims are “purely baseless and defamatory.” Trudeau says that Canada is also aware of other interference from Russia and Iran. Foreign interference has also been an internal political issue for Canada, as conservative politicians have claimed knowledge of foreign interference in the 2021 elections, while the New Democrats party and the head of the Conservative party have both criticized Trudeau on his claims. A recent poll released said that 2/3 of Canadians believe that there has been foreign meddling, and that around 65% of Canadians believe that China specifically meddled with their elections.
It’s not surprising that either China is trying to get involved with more countries globally, or that Canada is suspicious of Chinese involvement. It seems that there have been a lot more claims about election meddling, but it was honestly bound to happen soon. And as for China, I don’t really know what they’d get out of Canada, to be honest. There’s not much there, unless China is looking for raw resources and trying to more away from America. Either way, this will definitely be an interesting development as China has recently said that America is trying too hard to make them the enemy, so. Who knows.
