The Honduras government has officially made strides towards forming a relationship with China and distancing themself from Taiwan. Due to the high debt Honduras owes Taiwan, it has recognized that it needs relations with another state that will satisfy their investment needs. As a result of China not allowing any state to hold relations with itself and Taiwan (because they claim it as their own), that has allowed Honduras to further move away from relations with the state and develop one’s with China. Honduras currently owes Taiwan $600 million dollars, therefore is seeking the best financial solution for the country.
China gaining relations with Honduras will allow it to indirectly gain another ally and/or former relation with the U.S/western world. Since Taiwan is backed by the U.S. in more ways than one, Hondorus moving away from the state and towards China will also move it away from U.S. influence. Therefore, in a way, advancing Chinese ideologies and influence to Latin America. Opening the doors to gain more relations and further spread Chinese influence to a different part of the world. Also, strengthening their economy. This could lead to a change in values in Latin America and therefore relations with other states, including the U.S, in general.
This relates back to class because it discusses the topic of influence that the U.S has versus China as world powers. This new advancement made by Honduras towards relations with China leaves questions for what future relations other Latin American countries will have with the U.S and China.
