On October 25th Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, met with the president of China, Xi Jinping. They met in Beijing, China and planned on discussing climate change. They ended up discussing more important topics such as their Fentanyl exports, forced labor, and the repression of democracy in Hong Kong. Before leaving the U.S. Newsom and the rest of the governor’s office decided he should leave those major discussions for the federal government to have with China. But, when he got there he had a change of mind. Newsom also brought up other issues such as the Californian being imprisoned for 17 years and the Israel/Hamas war.
Discussing these topics with the Chinese president allows the U.S to get a better understanding of China’s views and determine how to work with them in a more productive manner. It also helped to influence a meeting next month between the United States President, Joe Biden, and Xi Jinping to further the communication and hopefully build a stronger relationship. The United States and China have been trading partners since 1844 with China being the exporter and the United States being the importer. China will be able to use this stronger bond to build their economic benefit in trade with the United States. This could increase the potential for alliances and more teamwork in the future.
In class, we discussed “King of the Hill”. “King of the Hill” is a game that represents the states constantly fighting for global power. Currently the United States is the main global power and China is a rising power but China, as well as many other states, will continue to work to over power the US even if that means working with the US in the beginning and then challenging them in the end when they have gained enough power to compete.
