On October 19, 2024, North Korea announced that it had discovered a crashed South Korean Military drone, which it claimed was spreading Propaganda leaflets. Citing the drone’s make alone with a Leaflet box attachment, North Korea claims that it is pretty likely a South Korean Propaganda Drone, but it has not drawn any official conclusions. South Korea has refused to respond to any claims made by North Korea, claiming that the allegations are a ploy to start retaliations between the two countries. Tensions have been escalating for quite some time between the Koreas, starting after North Korea began flying Balloons of trash over to Seoul. This led to South Korea restarting the playing of Propaganda broadcasts across the border. North Korea has said that if they detect any military action from South Korea, War would let loose between the Koreas again.

The tension between the two Koreas is nothing new in my lifetime. I fully believe that South Korea is willing and capable of sending propaganda drones into North Korea, and if that drone is from South Korea, I doubt that North Korea would do much of anything. North Korea has already threatened to send troops to help Russia in the Ukrainian war, and if those allegations are true, I don’t think that North Korea would have the resources to fight a second battle on its border. THis is most likely another North Korean bolstering attempt, threatening harm if they are undermined. But Korea has made many threats like this in the past, and few, if any, have indeed come to fruition because there is nothing they can do. If North Korea tries to fight beyond its boundaries, the world will jump on it. This honestly sounds like two siblings fighting over who was in whose room.

We have already seen how the two main stakeholders holders reacted to the event. North Korea threatened war if this was a provocative mission by South Korea, and South Korea refused to address the North Korean claims. However, beyond what has already been said by the two countries, there is a bit of a legitimate threat. North Korea could continue to do what it has done in the past and let its claims fizzle out until the next time the two go at each other, or North Korea could start a border war with South Korea. South Korea, on the other hand, could continue to ignore North Korea, like they always have, or they could say that enough is enough and intimate a preemptive strike against North Korea.

It is in both countries’ national interest to avoid a war. Neither of the countries ’ economies could handle a war. Coupled with Nuclear warfare and the presence of much stronger countries, both of the Koreas would be demolished. This entire event is most likely a front on both sides. South Korea wants to start a revolution against the North Korean Government to stop the neighboring threat, and North Korea needs to keep a solid exterior to keep the current government in power.
