Reurters article reports that the Philippines has declared a formal protest with China over Beijing’s escalating actions in the South China Sea. This protest was made because of the recent Chinese military presence of Chinese vessels in disputed waters. The Philippine government has expressed concern and proclaimed that these actions violate the country’s sovereignty in international law, especially the UN’s convention of the Law of the Sea. This protest is an ongoing effort to counter China’s increasing militarization of the region. The overall point is that the Philippines is seeking to defend sovereignty and uphold the rights of international law of Beijing’s growing territorial claims. This Protest shows the ongoing tension and disputes in the region, mostly showing China’s assertiveness is a ongoing challenge in neighboring countries.

This protest  from the Philippines could have a major effect on international law, mostly maritime laws.If this dispute over the South China Sea continues to grow, it may force the international community to revise how to enforce maritime laws and norms. This could potentially influence future international legal frameworks. One long and damaging effect this could have globally is the destabilization of these countries. The South China Sea is a vital and critical  waterway for global trade, escalating disputes between China and the Philippines as well as other neighboring counties could destabilize the region. Confrontation or territorial claims could lead to security risks, not only affecting countries involved but also the global community.

This article I would say brings in alot of the theory of dominance within countries and main global arena actors, As China’s increasing control over disputed water increases a potential strategy to show will on weaker states. Despite the opposition made by various states, China continues to impose territorial  claims, demonstrating a dominance based approach to regional politics . As well the security dilemma is vastly shown through the actions of the Philippines protest against China. China’s actions prompt insecurity in neighboring states like the Philippines, which then these states seek to boost their security towards alliances such as with the U.S, another big global actor. Overall this article illustrates security concerns and the shift of dominance and power concerns in the South China Sea showing that China is seeking expansion.
