The president of Taiwan, William Lai Ching-te stated early this morning that efforts need to be taken by its allies and its own domestic security bureaus to step up against enhanced Chinese infiltration and spying on Taiwanese military assets, in attempts to undermine Taiwan and speed up China’s attempts to reoccupy the island. President Lai has cited this is because of a series of incidents by Chinese infiltration efforts that are on the verge of open conflict, primarily through psychological and subversive means. Beijing has been reported by the Taiwanese to have been attempting to obtain national security secrets and to lure Taiwanese military officials to sway the security of Taiwan and strike at its safely guarded sovereignty.
A suggestion made by President Lai in his statement suggested the reintroduction of military trials for those indicted for treason on the collusion of spying and other major crimes. This, alongside, to make it harder to obtain Taiwanese visas and passports for those from the autonomous territories of Hong Kong, Macau, and the People’s Republic of China proper. This is most notably difficult to the intermarriage between Taiwanese and Chinese citizens, as they are culturally close. Overall, a series of new suggestions made by President Lai have been made to restrict Chinese influence and subversive actions in Taiwan, to distance itself from its cultural mainland, and neighboring geopolitical rival.
I anticipate that this could be extremely important for the standing of Taiwan’s security in the long term both domestically and externally as it is heavily important for their sovereignty that Chinese influence and subversion into its national security is heavily limited. Intimidation efforts by the P.R.C have been regular over the span of the last decade and a half as China aims to show its force and “motivate” a surrender of Taiwan’s sovereignty, which is closely guarded by Japan, Korea and the United States due to its strategic positioning and economic manufacturing importance.
As for how the Chinese could react to this, its likely they will outright deny any connection to the spying and subversion reportedly taking place in Taiwan by Chinese hands, and that they will, behind closed doors, will continue to do such actions as they aim to integrate the island into the People’s Republic and “reunite” all of China. America has not stated any response as of current, in short due to the recency of this article and the statement made by President Lai, and I fully expect a response to be made by either military officials or that of President Trump on the reported actions taken by the Chinese in Taiwan as TSMC invests further into American-based domestic manufacturing plants due to security concerns in Taiwan proper.
