This article discusses a recent meeting between the leader of Japan and the leader of Italy. This came about following a recent meeting between Sanae Takaichi of Japan and Giorgia Meloni of Italy. During this meeting the two discussed the unique positions as the first female leaders of their respective countries. The two seemed to share a close bond, personally taking pictures and commenting highly of each other, though they both asserted that their relationship would always be in the best interest of their respective countries. The article notes that both of these leaders are representing the right wing parties of Japan and Italy and do not necessarily focus on more rights for women, specifically blocking some pro-women legislatures in their countries.
This article is very interesting because it discusses the unique situation and relationship between these two women. Both Japan and Italy are historically very patriarchal so it is interesting to see two women leading these countries. Japan and Italy are also some of the only major first world countries to have female leaders at this time outside of Mexico and a few others. I think that this meeting will spark an increase in economic relationships between the two countries that previously have had minimal interaction with each other. It would seem likely that in the advent of potential tariffs or bans on Japanese goods in China that Italy would step up in order to fill that gap.
There is little indication of any specific action by either party as this was simply an initial and friendly meeting between the two leaders. However, I would say that it is very likely that the two countries will begin to increase their trade relationship in order to benefit both parties. I think this is especially important for Japan as due to recent comments made by Takaichi regarding China and Taiwan, the market for Japanese goods in China is at significant risk which would greatly harm the Japanese economy. Economic health is also extremely important for Japan after they had to increase the interest rate to an all time high at the start of this year.
This is another example of how diplomacy between leaders is extremely important because leaders who are personable and good orators are able to build connections to other leaders that thereby benefit the country as a whole. This is also an example of head of country versus head of state as while Giorgia Meloni is not the head of country for Italy she is the head of state as prime minister and thus represents Italy which in this specific instance is extremely important for Italian diplomacy with Japan.
