The article talks about how China’s exports increased significantly in the first two months of the year, rising by more than 20 percent, which was far higher than economists expected. China combines January and February trade data because the Lunar New Year holiday can affect monthly results. The increase was mainly driven by strong global demand for electronics as well as higher shipments of agricultural and manufactured goods. Trade with European countries grew by 27.8 percent and exports to Southeast Asian nations in the ASEAN group rose by nearly 30 percent. However exports to the United States fell by more than 10 percent after tariffs were imposed by President Donald Trump. Despite this decline exports remain a major driver of China’s economy as it deals with weak consumer spending a shrinking population and problems in the property market.

This article demonstrates how China is continuing to adapt to the economic pressures of the US tariffs. They are keeping up with this pressure by strengthening trade with other regions. Even though exports to the U.S. declined, increased trade with Europe and Southeast Asia allowed China’s exports to grow overall. By doing this China is strategically diversifying trade partners in order to reduce thor dependence on the American market. These trade tensions between the US and China  in the past had resulted in shaping global economic relations, specifically during the time period of the trade wars during Trump’s first presidency. This situation has the possibility of creating different global patterns with Asia and Europe becoming more central partners for China. Looking Long term, this may weaken U.S. influence in global trade.

In my opinion I think there are several ways stakeholders could react in this situation. I think it is likely that the United States may continue tariffs or negotiate new trade agreements to protect domestic industries and reduce the trade deficit with China. China will also take initiative to trade with the ASEAN countries along with Europe to shift that idea of dependence and compensate for the reduced US demand. With this shift in demand, both Sutheast asian nations along with European nations will swoop in, to take advantage of China’s increased demand and strengthen economic ties with Beijing. As for the concept of international relations, they might take part in this situation by encouraging dialogue and helping mediate trade disputes. Countries also might want to shift supply chain processes and production locations in order to avoid tariffs, ultimately reshaping the global manufacturing network.

This article connects to many concepts we have talked about in class. These concepts include economic interdependence, international security, and globalization. The big idea in this article is that the trade relationship between countries influences political power along with the concept of stability in the international system. Economic competition is reflected by The US imposing tariffs , creating tension between major powers. It is also related to the different international institutions we have learned about including the world trade organization  which is meant to regulate trade disputes and maintain fair trade practices.. This article also mentions regional organizations like the ASEAN and how they play a role in global trade networks. This whole article is representative of the main idea that economic policy can affect international cooperation, security, and power balances between states.
