Myanmar’s military government has transferred ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi from prison to house arrest after more than four years of detention following the 2021 coup. Now 80, she had been serving a 27-year sentence on charges including corruption and election fraud, widely viewed by critics as politically motivated. State media said she will remain under house arrest for the rest of her reduced sentence, though her exact location was not disclosed. Her family has expressed concern about her declining health and continues to call for her full release.

The move comes as Myanmar’s junta seeks international legitimacy. Military leader Min Aung Hlaing recently assumed a civilian leadership role after controversial elections that excluded opposition parties, resulting in a military-dominated government. The regime has also released some prisoners and reduced sentences, including freeing former president Win Myint. Despite these gestures, rights groups report that tens of thousands of political prisoners remain detained, highlighting ongoing repression and raising doubts about the sincerity of the junta’s reforms.

This reduction of sentence and relocation to house arrest is a strategic move made by junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to gain and restore international and national legitimacy following the “rigid” election.  Despite Junta’s reforms and hope for legitimacy, doubts arise because thousands of political prisoners remain jailed.  The main goal of moving former leader to house arrest is for Myanmar and  junta leader Min Aung Hlaing to gain international legitimacy for upcoming and future summits.

This is connected to the reach and hope for national legitimacy and regional legitimacy. The junta is attempting to portray a reformist image to lessen international sanctions and pressure, while holding onto total authority and power in myanmar.
