This article is about how Australia has now made the decision to accept U.S beef that has been sourced from Canada and Mexico. Australian beef trading has avoided this specific livestock due to the fact that it ran higher risks for “mad cow disease”. However, just recently, Australia has agreed to import this cow meat and plans to talk to US President Donald Trump about US tariffs on Australian imports due to the fact that the President has been discussing Australia’s decisions on trading with the US on social media and news reporting multiple times now.

In my opinion the article clearly demonstrates how America is strategically manipulating other countries into conformity by imposing tariffs, reporting negatively on Australia and reacting positively when Australia does what would benefit America. This is important because it sets a dangerous precedent for other countries risking ruining their economy to satisfy Americas wants when America exploits its power and puts enormous economic pressure despite knowing why the country would be affected negatively long term for doing so. This is shown in the article when Australian representatives discuss how badly it could hurt their livestock if the disease infected the cattle. This means that the region is at risk of being compromised if the disease gets out since Australia prides itself on its cow supply and losing it would be a devastating and long lasting effect on their region and economy. On a positive note once Australia starts importing more American beef it could lower the cost of cow beef and increase the food supply in Australia alleviating financial pressure on Australian families who rely on beef as a food staple. I believe that Australia loosened it’s bans to avoid penalties from America and side with America since historically they have been allies with each other

The main stakeholders involved in this event are the American and Australian government and beef industry, as well as consumers of beef products. The American government and beef industry would economically benefit from the trade ban loosening since they would be able to sell to more people and react in ways to keep this ban loosened, however Australian stakeholders including Australian consumers would either benefit from more produce availability or economically and socially plummet from their cow’s getting diseased and people getting sick. Considering these factors, I believe that Australian stakeholders would, in general, react cautiously against loosening the ban.

In class we have discussed the theme of international relations between countries and the terminology of power. This connects to the article because the article talks about how the U.S. and Australia are interacting with each other on the basis of trade, how America may be overextending its economic authority/power, and developing their relationship in the beef industry. The two countries expanded on policies that they had set in the past and loosened certain bans in favor of expanding their trade, however, whether it works out positively for Australia is still up in the air.
