Chinese president Xi Jinping has been visiting multiple poor villages as a part of more than 80 inspections since he was elected general secretary of the communist party of China (CPC) central committee in late 2012. However, his visit to the less-developed Guizhou Province this week signals a change. With the country’s victory in ending total poverty, the focus of work in agriculture, rural areas, and farmers has shifted to supporting rural virtualization. The consolidation of poverty-relief successes is a top priority. The more difficult it is for a region to break free from poverty, the more important it is to consolidate and extend its poverty-eradication achievements. Xi chose Guizhou because it is home to the last nine counties to be excluded from the country’s poverty list, and he wanted to see firsthand the living conditions of those who had overcome adversity. Efforts to consolidate achievements in poverty eradication and fully promote the rural vitalization strategy were called for at a key session of the 19th CPC Central Committee last October. Last December, at the annual central rural work conference, Xi stressed that China should press for all-around rural vitalization as a “historic change” in the focus of its work concerning agriculture, rural areas, and farmers.

By Xi Jinping deciding to go out of his way to visit these remote areas will low population densities and low income, he’s showing his people how he will make change and improve the conditions in these areas. Jinping wants to show his citizens the effort he is putting into improving the conditions of the elderly and poor who live out in remote areas of China. It is a very smart playing card move by Jinping because it would also get the media attention to others in the country.
