At least 38 people were killed in Myanmar on Wednesday, according to the United Nations, in the country’s “bloodiest day” since the coup a month ago. Christine Schraner Burgener, the UN envoy to Myanmar, said there was shocking footage coming out of the region. Security forces allegedly opened fire with rubber and live bullets, according to witnesses. Across Myanmar, there have been large-scale demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience. Protesters also demanded the end of military rule and the release of the country’s elected officials, including Aung San Suu Kyi, who was arrested and overthrown in the coup. International criticism of the coup and the brutal repression of demonstrations that followed has been voiced, but Myanmar’s military has so far remained silent. In response to the deaths on Wednesday, the United Kingdom called for a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, while the United States said it was taking further action against Myanmar’s military. Myanmar’s neighbors urged the military to show caution the day before the new violence broke out. As world powers view Myanmar’s crisis with growing unease, the country’s military said it was ready to withstand sanctions and isolation after its coup.

Seeing a large scale coup break out during a world pandemic is something that a neighboring country should not just walk away from. Thousands of citizens in Myanmar are suffering because of the coup from the military since it has broken out and are trying to actively flee from it. The UN should deploy military troops into Myanmar to try to stop their military from continuing this coup to break the country even further as it could cause more problems in the future for the country.

The coup in Myanmar is an example of how a military can seize power from the government and try to overtake it and seize the country. If you give a country’s military too much power, you risk something like the situation in Myanmar to happen.
