Chinese Ambassador Qin Gang made a statement, saying “At the center of democracy is people.” The statement was said on Wednesday at the Carter Center and George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China relations. This quote has ties to a famous saying from Abraham Lincoln, “of the people, by the people, for the people.” Qin Gang also goes on to question the United States democracy. Gang believes that our democracy has changed in a way that the government of the United States has shied away from listening to the people. It is not a secret that China and the United States have criticism of how the opposing country is run. Gang wants nothing more than a strong relationship with Unites States, but is fearful that bridge is already burnt.

Qin Gang’s statement came out of the blue. It is true that the United States are in times of struggle, however the U.S. is not turning against democracy. It is also strange to me that a communist country is calling out the U.S. for how we run a democracy. Most Chinese citizens want a democracy in a China yet their government won’t listen. Starting a fresh, new relationship with China would take time and I don’t foresee it happening in the near future. I believe that staying away from the Chinese is best option at this point. Siding with a rival country that is communist could create many problems now and down the road.

As I mentioned before, the United States partnering with China would unleash a chain reaction of endless issues with other countries. Countries from South America to Europe would pull out of current relationships with the United States. I can imagine members of the Unites Nations not fully supporting Gang’s speech. It looks unprofessional to see one country calling out another. Small countries such as Gabon and Fiji watch China and the United States go after each other on a regular basis. It is ironic that United Nations means together even though their doesn’t seem to be much togetherness between key countries of the United Nations.
