Europeans see ‘problem’ if Iran is not serious in nuclear talks this week

After 6 years Iran has shown increasing seriousness about resurrecting the 2015 nuclear deal with major powers (US, European Powers, and China). The ideas for the talks started up again this week after a 5-month hiatus. The talks in question ended in 2018 while President Donald Trump was in office, President Trump also imposed harsh economic sanctions on Iran. Senior officials from the E3 (England, France, and Germany) told the press earlier this week that if the talks were to start up again it would all be determined by Iran’s seriousness. Though if the talks are started again, it is put into question if the draft from last June will be administered for negotiations as it is not an agreement. A senior european diplomat said that 70-80% of the draft is done but they do not know if the Iranian side is willing to reconvene where they had left off. Though in those last 20-30% were the most pressing matters that will need to be discussed. Iran’s top nuclear expert says that everything is on the table, even what was already discussed in the 6 rounds of meetings in Vienna last April and June.

I believe that the deal that is trying to be made between the powers is a good idea. Talks with Iran on a nuclear agreement have been in the works for over half a decade, which just shows how important these talks are. The diplomatic approach is definitely the right approach for now and the excessive sanctions put on Iran by the US were too much. I do hope that the talks will continue where they left off last June. That way, the officials from both sides can focus on the more sensitive issues that will take time and cooperation to agree on.

As we have learned in class this is more of a constructivist approach to the issue. Yes it does seem to be more liberalist due to the fact that it is taking more of a diplomatic approach and the use of collective security by creating an alliship between Iran and other major powers to avoid any nuclear transgressions. Realist theory could also be used in this dealing as well, because some could say that with the nuclear deal between Iran and major powers being made could be connected to classical realism. This is because with the new talks starting the new iranian President is looking for more demands to put into the deal, though it is also in the offensive part of neorealism with Iran maximizing power to ensure security.
